Cold wave prompts cash gifts

Wed, 22 Dec 2010

Many people in the UK are sending cash gifts to friends and family as fears about travel disruptions over Christmas take hold.

The country has been in the grip of cold weather for some weeks and has seen heavy snowfall and ice in different areas.

As retailers warn customers that their ordered purchases may be delayed due to the adverse conditions, a number of Britons are sending cash presents to their loved ones to avoid disappointing them.

Figures from the Payments Council show that as many as eight million people in the UK are taking this route.

Sandra Quinn, a spokeswoman for the organisation, said: "It seems that rather than requesting treats and luxuries this Christmas many younger adults are just hoping to improve their finances, and the bad weather we've got at the moment may well make that dream come true.

" Electronic payments can be processed straight away so there's no risk of your loved ones going without on Christmas day, and no delivery that can get caught up in the snow."
