UK broadband customers spend about two hours per week using an online banking portal, a new study has indicated.
Research from financial services advice and switching company uSwitch indicated that the growth in online banking usage forms part of the overall increase in internet activity.
In addition to online banking, social networking sites are growing in popularity, with MySpace and Facebook becoming increasingly used. Indeed, the study found that 780,000 adults spend more of their time socialising online than in real life.
Steve Weller, head of communications services at uSwitch, commented: "It's very exciting to see Britain taking broadband by the scruff of the neck and making full use of the online world in today's demanding 24/7 environment."
He also described the growth in broadband subscriptions recorded in recent years as "explosive" and predicted the trend will continue as providers innovate and offer new products to consumers.
A spokesperson for NatWest recently suggested that online banking customers are using the web to conduct and increasingly complex range of services as they become ever more confident in the medium.
