More than one million customers who do their personal banking online with HSBC have opted to help the environment by cancelling paper statements, it has been revealed.
For the last three years, any HSBC banking customer who is signed up to its personal internet banking system has been given the option of stopping the delivery of paper statements, which traditionally inform them about the state of their savings accounts and mortgage accounts.
And the banking giant has revealed that in excess of a million banking customers have taken them up on this offer to date, which is apparently saving 13 million pieces of paper and seven million envelopes per year.
Commenting on the initiative, HSBC's general manager of personal financial services Joe Garner said: "HSBC has been offering customers the opportunity to turn off their paper statements for three years.
"We are absolutely delighted with customers' response so far and to have passed the milestone of one million accounts."
In addition to cutting down on the need for waste paper, banking customers who choose virtual banking can benefit from being able to view their accounts at their own convenience on a home computer, without having to visit a high street branch.
