Britons could be at risk from online banking, study shows

Mon, 25 Sep 2006

Many UK residents could be putting themselves at risk by not taking the correct security measures when using online banking services, according to new research.

Britons are "overly complacent" when using online banking, not taking adequate steps to protect themselves from phishing and other fraud attacks, Apacs has claimed.

Some 15.7 million UK online banking customer regularly use the service, which is most popular with 25 to 34-year-olds, with eight out of ten users checking their details on a regular basis.

Sandra Quinn, director of corporate communications, commented: "This new research shows that some people still aren't doing all they should to protect themselves which, hand in hand with a large increase in phishing email attacks at the start of the year, leads us to expect an increase in online banking fraud losses in the first half of 2006."

Ms Quinn added that the results of the research were a "concern" and Britons need to take all possible steps to protect themselves against fraudsters.

Many services are available for online banking customers, including viewing personal loans, credit cards and ordering statements.
