Security fears deter potential online banking shoppers

Less people carry out online banking than would be the case if public confidence in internet security was higher, new research has found.

A survey by NOP showed that 43 per cent of consumers have never carried out personal banking or shopped online because of a lack of confidence in internet security systems, PC Advisor reports.

The survey showed a significant age gap when it came to levels of trust in banking technology, with 84 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds confident that online transactions were safe, compared with 54 per cent of over-65s.

Enterasys security expert Mark Pearce told the magazine: "There is still a huge amount of untapped business for those companies who can address and convince customers that their information is in safe hands."

The news of the poll comes at the same time as the Retail Bulletin reports that online fraudsters are preparing to exploit the Christmas spending boom.

Referring to predictions of a 40 per cent rise in card not present fraud, it has published a list of recommendations for retailers from 192.com Business Services to help them prevent such crimes.
