Tue, 23 May 2006

Users of online banking feel in control of their finances, according to research.

Statistics collated by YouGov show that 44 per cent of online banking users asked felt fully in control of their banking and finances.

Also 44 per cent of individuals who used online banking stated that they checked their bank account at least twice a week.

Only three per cent of individuals who rely on their branches would check their banking and finance details as often.

The most commonly used online banking services are balance checks, with 96 per cent of customers using this service and recent transaction checks, with 87 per cent regularly doing this online.

Helen Palmer, manager of current accounts at Alliance &Leicester, states that banking online gives clients "immediate, 24-hour access" to up-to-date financial information.

"You can keep track of your in and out-goings which means you have a clearer idea of where you stand and so can easily avoid going into the red by mistake," added Ms Palmer.

Statistics from Gfk Marketing Services' financial research survey shows a 63 per cent rise in online banking use since 2003, with a UK-wide population of over 14 million using virtual banking.
