Barclays bank will offer free anti-virus software to users of its online banking services, according to the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

The bank will offer the award winning F-Secure software, as part of a scheme to make online banking safer for customers.

F-Secure anti-virus packages features automatic hourly virus updates and also protects against spyware and worms.

Tactics used by fraudsters to obtain banking information from online banking users include phishing, where an email is sent to users requesting their details which appears to be from a bank and Trojans, which can install software to read login and security information.

Barclays are also launching a free SMS service designed to help make online banking more secure, alerting customers when any third-party transactions are made on the account.

The bank’s director of online banking, Barnaby Davis, also commented to the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce: "Online banking has revolutionised the way people manage their money and we are constantly working to keep our services as secure as possible."

"Our new anti-virus and SMS text initiatives will go a long way towards offering customers additional protection and peace of mind and help Barclays and its customers stay one step ahead of the criminals," he added.

Other advice offered by Barclays to customers is to ensure they always log out of online banking services and to always keep their login details secret.
