Online banking increasingly popular, survey shows

Thu, 02 Mar 2006

More than half of British banking customers use online banking to conduct most of their financial business, new research shows.

Alliance & Leicester found that online banking is rising in popularity, with 29 per cent of Britons claiming they now use internet banking at least once a week.

Some 12 per cent of banking customers log on to use online banking every day, the survey shows.

People are seemingly becoming more confident using online banking, as 61 per cent say they use this form of banking a great deal more than they did a couple of years ago.

At present, more than 14 million people in the UK use internet banking, according to Alliance & Leicester.

"The pressures of modern life mean that internet banking is the best option for many UK banking customers," says Andy Muddimer, the head of internet banking at Alliance & Leicester.

He points out that the internet is becoming ever more important in people's day-to-day life, which could indicate that internet banking will continue becoming more popular.

"As ever, security is a very real issue and at Alliance & Leicester we are always looking at ways we can develop and increase security for our online banking customers," Mr Muddimer notes.
