Online banking customers of Alliance & Leicester are expected to benefit from a new system aimed at protecting them against fraud.
Extra security measures have been introduced by the bank to ensure the safety of online banking transactions.
A two-fold system firstly identifies the online banking customer's PC when they log on to their internet banking.
The bank then confirms its own identity by showing the online banking customer a phrase and image that are unique and were chosen by the internet banking customer from thousands of options.
This double check of identity has been designed to provide online banking customers with additional confidence and security.
"We believe that the new security measures offered by Alliance & Leicester will ease people's security fears surrounding internet banking and encourage more people to bank online," comments Andy Muddimer, the bank's head of internet banking.
He says the new online banking security system is "easy to use" and has been successful in America.
Mr Muddimer says internet banking security is of "utmost importance" for Alliance & Leicester and that the bank is "delighted" to be the first to launch this online banking technology in Britain.
