UK residents use online banking to keep track of their finances, according to research.

Just under two-thirds of UK account holders use an online banking service to keep up-to-date with their finances, states the report

Furthermore, the Royal bank of Scotland survey shows that 17 per cent use online banking to keep track of their money every day.

Silver surfers - account holders over 55 use online banking the most, with 88.5 per cent using the service, which compares with a UK average of 78 per cent.

Furthermore, the demographic are also more likely to use online banking to check their balance every day, at 25 per cent, compared to an average of 17 per cent in the UK.

Lloyds TSB recently conducted research which echoes this, showing that users of online banking lead "fuller lives", saving on average 305 days over the course of their lifetime.

Chris Wardrope of Lloyds TSB Scotland life sciences and technology unit commented: "Many people assume that the internet has had a detrimental affect on family life and relationships but in fact the opposite is true in many situations.

"Doing everyday chores online can give people extra time on their hands and the fact that people are preferring to invest this time in their family or in their own personal health by exercising or relaxing is a very positive trend."
