London's elderly to get online banking boost

Fri, 16 Jun 2006

A new initiative has been launched in London to help the elderly use internet services such as online banking.

The scheme, which has the backing of Mayor Ken Livingstone, will involve organisations donating hardware they no longer need to computer company Maxitech.

Maxitech will then refurbish and safely wipe the systems, before distributing them to London's Age Concern branches.

Thousands of the capital's elderly residents are set to benefit from the scheme and will now obtain access to internet services such as online banking and retail.

Online banking has been identified as a key area in helping the UK's older residents to become a part of the virtual community.

Samantha Mauger, Age Concern London chief executive, said: "This will make such a difference to the lives of many older people who find it hard to get out due to illness, disability or mobility problems and find everyday tasks such as shopping and banking and even socialising difficult."

Some companies are now taking extra steps to ensure the security of online banking customers; Barclays has recently launched free antivirus software for its users.
