Britons use internet banking to keep on target, study shows

Many UK residents are regularly using modern methods - such as internet banking - to keep on top of their finances, according to a new report.

Some 72 per cent of Britons log on to their internet banking account in order to manage their money, a study from Abbey found.

Additionally, 86 per cent of respondents believe that they are managing their finances well or very well, with 73 per cent checking their account at least once per week.

However, while Scottish citizens believe that they are least in control of their cash, they were found to be more likely to arrange direct debits after payday and checked their accounts more often.

Steve Shore, head of banking at Abbey, said: "It is clear that modern British society is more confident about managing its finances.

"New technology, such as the internet, is empowering customers."

Lloyds TSB recently launched a new internet banking service which enables customers to organise and pay their household bills online.

Anita Hockin, the bank's head of internet, said that the speed and simplicity of internet banking had proved popular with consumers.
