The proportion of people banking online has risen by almost two-thirds since 2003, according to new research.
A survey conducted by Alliance and Leicester found that over three-quarters of consumers conduct all or at least most of their banking online. This compares to just 39 per cent two years ago.
Online banking has not only won fans because of its convenience, but also because many feel that banking via the web helps them keep better control of their finances.
Approximately seven out of ten said they found it easier to track down bank statements online to keep a check on their spending, rather than trying to find paper copies.
Online banking could also help consumers avoid becoming a victim of identity fraud, as online banking reduces the need for so much paperwork to be sent out.
This would be of use to the one in ten Brits that admit that they don't destroy their paper bills properly, with at least four per cent saying they barely attempt to destroy bank statements before they go in the bin.
