Many of today's women are earning more money than their partners as well as managing a family home, making 24-hour banking services essential.
A new survey by the 24-hour banking firm First Direct found that nine million women said they earned more than their partners at some stage in their career.
Yet many of them were also in charge of running a household, doing the banking and carrying out the majority of the housework.
"While women's salaries are slowly catching up with men's, most women are still doing more than their fair share of the chores around the home," commented Richard Kimbler, chief executive of the banking company.
He added that the research showed that over half of the women were responsible for paying household bills and 44 per cent said they did a disproportionate amount of housework compared to their partner.
This means that today's 24-hour service economy is vital to women who need to be able to do their banking, including paying credit card bills or transferring money into savings accounts at anytime of day.
In fact the banking company's survey found that a third of the women questioned said they wished more services were open 24 hours a day to help them get more things done.
