Internet banking customers are active 24 hours a day, a new survey shows.
In the last year, HSBC's online banking customers logged into their accounts over 443,000 times between eleven at night and six in the morning.
The busiest time for internet banking activity in this time window was found to be between eleven and midnight, the bank says.
Checking bank statements was the favoured activity for 29 per cent of nocturnal online banking customers.
The lifestyles of banking customers changed dramatically over the last two decades, believes the head of business banking at HSBC, Simon Wainwright.
"Technological advances and government legislation mean we can now shop, eat, drink, exercise, fill up our cars, watch television or even see a doctor 24 hours a day," he points out.
And with Britons working longer hours than before, the demand for round-the-clock service has increased, Mr Wainwright explains.
A 45-hour working week is a greater possibility for British employees than for any other European worker, it was pointed out.
