The Cooperative Bank, part of the CFS group, has built up a strong reputation within the banking industry for its refreshing ethical approach to banking. The bank is part of Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) which also includes Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) and the Smile internet bank.
Also known as the Co-op, the bank has around 3 million UK customers. In addition to focusing on ethics, the Co-operative bank has also launched a range of innovative products and services including a fixed rate credit card and an interactive TV service. The bank was also one of the first to use cash machines to top up mobile phone payment cards.
The Co-operative banking service covers the majority of financial products, with the exception of investments and pensions. The service focuses on loans, credit cards, mortgages and insurance as well as standard and premium bank accounts.
All their accounts operate within a strict ethical policy, which ensures an account holder’s cash - whilst it is with the bank - is not invested in countries or companies which breach the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Additional clauses relate to animal welfare, ecological impact, GM foods and global trade policy.
Another bonus is that due to the Co-operative's long standing link with the Post Office, customers are able to get cash from Post Offices in addition to Cooperative branches.
Co-operative Internet Banking
The Co-operative internet banking service allows users to view accounts and balances set-up, amend or cancel bill payments and cash transfers, and check past statements (up to 6 back or 4 Visa statements).
Forms and cheque books can also be ordered online and there is a useful 23-hour helpline available to users. In terms of safety, all online Co-operative customers are protected by a range of strict security measures including the latest encryption technology.
