Online banking hit by Oddjob Trojan

Tue, 01 Mar 2011

A new Trojan has been created by fraudsters which steals money by keeping victims' online bank accounts open after they think they've logged out.

Criminals in Eastern Europe are using the Trojan, called Oddjob, to target windows-based computers and plunder funds from accounts in the United States, Poland, and Denmark, says Amit Klein, chief technology officer of the security firm Trusteer.

He said: "It is early days for this malware, it appears to be a work in progress. We have seen differences in hooked functions in recent days and weeks, as well as the way the command and control protocols operate. We believe that these functions and protocols will continue to evolve in the near future, and that our analysis of the malware's functionality may not be 100 per cent complete as the code writers continue to refine it."

The Trojan is able to take over customers' online banking sessions in real time by using the session ID tokens that are passed between the customer and the bank's web site.
