There was a significant drop in online banking fraud losses last year, according to new figures.
The UK Cards Association and Financial Fraud Action UK, both part of the UK Payments Administration, reported that £46.7m was stolen via online banking in 2010, which is a fall of 22 per cent from the previous year figure.
The payments industry said awareness of cyber threats by bank account customers had attributed to the decrease in online fraud losses, as well as the banks' use of sophisticated fraud prevention software.
Detective chief inspector Paul Barnard, head of the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit (DCPCU), said: "Whilst another drop in cyber fraud is good news, the fraudsters haven't shut up shop which is why there can be no room for complacency on the part of the banking industry, retailers, law enforcement or indeed customers."
He added that people who fall victim to payment fraud on their debit card or bank account are protected and should not suffer any financial loss.
