First New UK High Street Bank in Over 100 Years Opens

Fri, 30 Jul 2010

Metro Bank yesterday became the first new high street bank to open in the UK for more than 100 years. The banks PR department went all out for the launch of the new Holborn branch, with a traditional jazz band playing outside, and a big fuss being made of any dog brought into the store in an attempt to highlight the personal approach the bank hopes to take.

Critics threw the 'style over substance' card at the bank, and they had plenty to substantiate this claim. The banks existing range of savings accounts and current accounts fail to offer 'best buy' interest rates, and it is a similar story with their credit card, mortgage and personal loan products.

It's not all a facade though, as many new customers registered their appreciation at the banks decision to open seven days a week. Though optimistic, the banks pledge to print and issue debit cards and credit cards within 15 minutes held true on the opening day of the branch, in a sign that Metro Bank just might be able to make the useful contribution of creating a more convenient style of banking .
