The amount of people banking online now numbers 22 million, meaning over 50 per cent of internet users are using the service.
Figures from the Payments Council also show that 95 per cent of those banking online use it to check their balances, while 83 per cent use it to check statements.
However, the popularity of online banking services has also opened up customers to the threat of fraud .
Katy Worobec, head of fraud control at Financial Fraud Action UK, says: "The chances of becoming a victim of online or phone banking fraud are low, but there are a number of common sense steps that people can follow to significantly minimise the chances of becoming a victim of fraud ."
Among her recommendations for staying protected is to avoid sharing personal details or PIN numbers and to never access any services using hyperlinks in emails.
The growth in online banking comes at the same time as the industry seeks to phase out the use of cheques by 2018.
