First Direct has been voted as the best company in Britain for customer service, beating off stiff competition from John Lewis and Waitrose.
The HSBC-owned online bank came first in a Which? poll which compared 75 of the UK's best-known brands. At the other end however, the 10,600 Which? subscribers chose AOL Broadband as 'best avoided', with the Spanish bank Santander and phone and broadband provider TalkTalk following closely behind.
Each brand was given an overall customer satisfaction score. First Direct achieved 89 per cent for its 'helpful' customer support. John Lewis received 86 per cent and Waitrose 85 per cent.
It is another accolade for First Direct to add to its growing collection. In September, Which?'s independent experts honoured it with the title of best bank for customer service, with Virgin, Smile, Co-op and Cahoot following behind. Which? says: "Its success is down to the staff who, customers tell us, are always quick to deal with queries and act cordially."
