Lloyds Banking Group is Britain's most complained about bank, the Financial Ombudsman Service has today revealed. 15,233 customers lodged complaints in the first half of the year, as the Ombudsman publically revealed the figures for the first time today. 82 per cent of complaints the Service received about the banking group, which is part owned by the taxpayer, had been upheld - significantly more than its rivals.
The banks Black Horse business, responsible for selling personal loans and mortgages, was the banks worst unit, with 95 per cent of complaints upheld - the highest level of any of the 142 businesses investigation by the Ombudsman. The average proportion of complaints upheld for all individual businesses stood at 59 per cent. Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland both had 71 per cent of complaints upheld, compared with Abbey's 67 per cent.
Britain's five largest banking groups racked up a total of 38,286 complaints, accounting for more than half of all new complaints over the six month period. Barclays received the second highest number of complaints, with 9,056, significantly above the 5,883 received by Royal Bank of Scotland. Abbey and HSBC occupied fourth and fifth spot respectively.
