High street banking giants Natwest and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) have invested in new security software to protect the customers who have bank accounts with them.
Developed by Trusteer, the Rapport protection system will help online bankers use the companies' services more safely.
Recent tests by Cyveillance, a cyber intelligence monitor, found that more than half of malware and phishing threats, which could gather sensitive banking information, go undetected on people's computers .
The software is "easy to install" and free, according to the banks, and will help customers protect their details online.
Gavin Coull, e-crime prevention manager for RBS Group, said: "Our partnership with Trusteer to offer Rapport as a free security tool to our customers is the latest step taken as part of our investment in enhanced security."
Businesses which handle credit card transactions may be interested in a recent initiative from RSA, formerly Royal Sun and Alliance, which protects clients' data from being used fraudulently.
