Online banking users need educating

Thu, 13 Sep 2007

Privacy and education are key issues that need to be addressed by those who choose to do their banking online, an expert has said.

Consumers should be wary of putting personal information up over the web and making it available to view by the public, an expert from internet company Trend Micro warns.

A spokesperson for Trend Micro comments that social networking sites should educate their users on security over the internet, so that they understand the importance of putting all their details online.

"These sites should warn people that their information could be used by hackers or marketers," he remarks.

He adds that hackers only need a name, address, mobile number and date of birth to be halfway towards committing online fraud, which could be of interest to those who manage their banking accounts online.

According to Apacs, the UK's payment association, online banking fraud increased last year.

Figures from the company show that online banking breaches increased by 45 per cent to £33.5 million in 2006, up from £23.3 million in 2005.
