Barclays plans to tighten online banking security

Thu, 03 Aug 2006

Barclays is planning to issue its online banking customers with hand-held card readers in a bid to boost security.

The bank will provide the devices throughout 2007, which will be around the size of a calculator.

By scanning the chips on debit cards, the equipment will provide online banking customers with a password, which will be needed to access the service, Computing reports.

Barnaby Davis, director of online banking at Barclays , claims that the bank is keen for customers to benefit from enhanced security measures.

Mr Davis commented: "We plan to issue the card readers to all online banking customers and not just business customers."

"[This model] resists all known methods of fraud."

Barclays recently provided F-Secure and anti-spyware software for its online banking customers, in another bid to improve security for home users.

Customers could also benefit from the bank's text messaging service, which is designed to alert customers of any suspicious transactions, possibly allowing them to react as quickly as possible.

However, Mr Davis did not declare how much the new scanning system would cost customers to use.
